SUMMARY:Gardening for Life\: keynote address
DTSTART:20090309T181500Z
DTEND:20090309T191500Z
DESCRIPTION:With as many as 33\,000 species imperiled in the U.S.\, it
is clear that we must change our approach to gardening and landscapin
g if we hope to share the spaces we live and work with other living th
ings. Native plants will play a key role in the restoration of our lan
dscapes because only natives provide the coevolved relationships requi
red by animals. By supporting a diversity of insect herbivores\, nativ
e plants provide food for a large and healthy community of natural ene
mies that keep herbivores in balance and our gardens aesthetically ple
asing. Gardening in our crowded world carries both moral and ecologica
l responsibilities that we can no longer ignore
